Where is Hospice provided and Who pays for Hospice care?
Hospice care is provided wherever the patient calls home. Most hospice patients receive are at home or at home of a relative or a friend. Hospice care can also be provided in long term care facilities, nursing homes or hospitals.
Hospice care is covered through Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans, HMOs, and private pay. Anyone can refer a patient to a hospice program.
To be admitted, a patient must:
- Agree to treatment aimed at comfort rather than a cure.
- Have an incurable disease resulting to a limited life expectancy, as certified by a physician.
Discontinuing Hospice Care
A hospice patient and family may stop the hospice care anytime, for any reason. If they so choose to discontinue the service, health care benefits from the traditional or managed care Medicare/Medical program will continue. In some instances, patient's condition improves, in remission and or stable that the hospice team believes that the patient cannot be certified and not eligible for the benefit. Patient may return to hospice care as long as eligibility criteria is met, certified by the physician and hospice team.
